Announcing 2009 Chosen Charity
The Langley Healthy Living Expo is pleased to annouce this year's chosen charity for a second year:
Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association
Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association is a non-profit charitable organization providing therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with all forms of disabilities. In operation since 1983, the goal of the VTEA is to enhance the quality of life for the clients by improving their physical and mental well-being.
Nurturing the life-enhancement of riders with special needs demands staff, volunteers, very special horses, and motivated riders who work hard to meet goals. It also takes financial support. The Langley Healthy Living Expo is pleased to be able to support the VTEA through the proceeds of the 2008 and 2009 expos. Proceeds from the expos will be used to purchase necessary equipment, to provide helmets for safety, to meet the dietary needs, training, general care and routine veterinary care of the horses.
Riding a horse gives something very powerful to a person with disabilities. The feeling of achievement that comes from riding and maneuvering a horse is strong medicine. It turns defeat into victory and self-doubt into self-confidence. For those with cognitive challenges, the unconditional love of the horse reduces anxiety, encourages interaction and improves social skills.
